MAXIMS OF KARATE
CHARACTER • SINCERITY • ETIQUETTE • EFFORT • SELF-CONTROL

Originally written by Satsunuku “Tode” Sakugawa the maxims act as a set of principles to guide the karate student on a daily basis.

Show inner strength through a strong CHARACTER. Always seek perfection of character.

Live with SINCERITY. Keep to an honest and sincere way in all you do and all you are.

Respect yourself and others and live the true spirit and ETIQUETTE of Karate-Do.

Develop a respectful attitude towards all things and people.

Train the mind and body with every possible EFFORT, cultivate perseverance and the will to keep striving towards the achievement of your goals.

Strive towards the attainment of SELF–CONTROL.  Restrain your aggression through spiritual enlightenment and never abuse your karate skills. Remember that any form of violence should always be the last and only resort.

“The true essence of karate lies not in victory or defeat but in the perfection of character through effort, sincerity, respect and self-control.”
