Shorin-Ryu Shorinkan South Africa was established under the guidance of Kyoshi Claude Johnson in January 1994. As a national organization, Shorin-Ryu Shorinkan South Africa is affiliated to the Okinawan Shorin-Ryu Shorinkan through Kyoshi Pat Haley of Chico, California, USA.
Shorin-Ryu Shorinkan Karate is one of the foremost traditional karate styles in South Africa and is represented in a number of provinces and regions throughout the Republic. (Contact information for Dojo’s and instructors can be found on the SA Dojo’s page.)
Shorin-Ryu Shorinkan Karate South Africa practices Kobayashi-Ryu, the Okinawan school of Shorin-Ryu karate as founded by Choshin Chibana and as taught by the late Hanshi Shugoro Nakazato and currently by his successor and son, Hanshi Minoru Nakazato (JuDan).
South Africa is fortunate to be led by a committed National Executive consisting of Kyoshi Claude Johnson 8th Dan (President), Kyoshi Riaan Coetzee 7th Dan (Vice President), Kyoshi Tom Hayes 7th Dan, Kyoshi Steve Johnson 7thDan, Kyoshi Karl von der Marwitz 7th Dan, Renshi Anton van den Heever 6th Dan, Joep Joubert (Tournament director) and Renshi Erica Maritz 5th Dan (Secretary).
